Listehn
Privacy
Effective
Listehn has no accounts, no ads and no third-party trackers or analytics. Here is everything the site does keep, and why.
One small cookie
On your first visit we set a cookie called vid. It holds a random ID and nothing else: no name, no email, nothing about you. It lasts up to two years, it is only ever sent to Listehn, and scripts on the page can’t read it.
We use it for two things:
- Counting plays fairly. A play counts once per song, per visitor, every six hours.
- Remembering your smashes. Smashes use this same cookie, so the site knows which songs you smashed. There is no separate smash cookie.
On our server we never store the cookie value itself. With each counted play or smash we store a one-way, keyed hash of it, which can’t be turned back into your cookie.
Your IP address
To stop one network from inflating plays or smashes, we also store a one-way, keyed hash of your IP address with each counted play or smash, and briefly for rate limiting. Rate-limit entries are cleared after about a day. Your actual IP address is not stored in the database.
Server logs
Like almost every website, our web server keeps standard logs of requests: IP address, date and time, the page or file requested, your browser’s user-agent and the referring page. We use them only to keep the site secure and fix problems. Logs are rotated daily and deleted after about 14 days.
Stored in your browser
The player keeps two small things in your browser’s local storage: a list of songs it has recently counted (so a play isn’t reported twice) and cached waveform shapes so the player loads faster. These stay on your device and are never sent to us.
Search engines (IndexNow)
When new pages are published, we notify search engines through IndexNow so they can find them sooner. Only the public page addresses are sent. No visitor information is ever included.
What we don’t do
- No accounts or sign-ups, and we don’t ask for your email.
- No ads, ad networks or tracking pixels.
- No third-party analytics. Fonts and files are served from our own server.
- We don’t sell or share visitor data.
Links to other sites, like a support page, lead to services with their own privacy policies.
Your choices
You can block or clear cookies and local storage in your browser at any time. The music still plays; your smashes just won’t be remembered.
